Mararikulam Rail Accident

There was a rail accident in Mararikulam when a car was crushed at an unmanned rail cross at Poopally. The car was completely destroyed and no passenger in the car could survive the crash.

Among the diseased are a German couple – Manfred Herbert Gustav Rudolf Hoepfner, 54, and Katrin-Susanne Hoepfner, 47, a postgraduate student in tourism administration – Shanimol, 21, and the driver Antony.

Shanimol had arrived from Bangalore for a 45-day training at a near by resort where the couple were staying. Shanimol’s father Shaji, a resident of Valavanadu is a driver at the Arthunkal police station.

This is the first time that such a crash occurs in Mararikulam. The authorities have ensured that this crossing would soon be manned and a gate would be constructed here.

Mararikulam

Mararikulam is a narrow strip of land between the towns of Alappuzha and Cherthala bounded by NH47 in the east and the Arabian Sea in the west. Mararikulam which is famous for the Lord Siva temple is located towards the north of Kalavoor.

It’s near to the Arabian sea and has sandy beaches. Marari Beach Resort which became famous few years back has given this beach a new name – Marari Beach. More and more resorts are coming up here and it’s becoming a popular tourist destination. Mararikulam railway station connects this beautiful place to rest of India. NH47 also passes a mile away from here.

Mararikulam is the home place of Kerala Chief Minister Sri.VS Achuthanthan and Mararikulam Assembly constituency is the constituency from which finance minister Dr. Thomas Isac was elected.
